Committed to the principles of equality, inclusion and diversity to which Thurgood Marshall dedicated his professional life, the Thurgood Marshall Bar Association (TMBA) has been bringing members of the legal community together in Orange County for a dozen years. TMBA is a member organization of the Orange County Bar Association Racial Justice Task Force and runs a law student ambassador and scholarship program to encourage a more diverse legal community.

We asked the current association president Tremayne W. Wilson, Esq., of Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, LLP in Orange County to share a little more information about the organization’s mission and initiatives.

What is the mission of the Thurgood Marshall Bar Association (TMBA)?

Thurgood Marshall Bar Association (TMBA) is an Orange County-based nonprofit organization committed to connecting, supporting, and increasing the Black legal community in Orange County and to promoting diversity, professional improvement, and the advancement of justice. TMBA is committed to celebrating, honoring and displaying “Black Excellence,” which is this year’s theme.

Why is the organization personally special to you?

Black people make up less than 5% of attorneys in the United States and an even smaller percentage here in Orange County. These numbers have remained near constant for over a decade. TMBA is committed to changing this narrative by supporting Black students and attorneys in the Orange County legal community.

What are some specific ways that TMBA is addressing diversity issues in our legal community and beyond?  What can others do to help?

TMBA provides scholarships to law students, presents educational programming, hosts speakers, and honors and celebrates champions of justice, equality, and empowerment. We are always welcoming new members and donations.

Are there specific events/programs of the organization that you would like to highlight?

TMBA hosts an annual scholarship gala and a Juneteenth celebration each year. Please keep an eye on our website and social media accounts for announcements of next year’s dates.

Reflecting on global current events, any final thoughts to share?  

TMBA seeks to constantly affirm that Black lives matter.
