Hon. John A. Arguelles, Ret.

Retired Supreme Court Justice

Following 26 years of continuous service with the California courts, the last three on the Supreme Court, Justice John Arguelles retired in 1989. His judicial career began in 1963, when he was appointed by Governor Edmund Brown to the Los Angeles Municipal Court. After six years at that court, he was elevated by Governor Reagan to the Los Angeles Superior Court. In 1985, Governor Deukmejian appointed him to the Second District Court of Appeal, and then to the State Supreme Court in 1987. Justice Arguelles is currently active as an Arbitrator, Mediator and Private Judge for a wide variety of civil and appellate disputes, in addition to an Of Counsel position at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Clients commend him for his thoroughness, thoughtfulness and his strong, commanding presence in the hearing room. “There is no doubt of his commitment to be fair. He is an outstanding neutral,” noted one experienced litigator. Many others have concurred.
